OnePlus One

OnePlus One

Dubbed as the ‘flagship killer’, the OnePlus One is the latest handset from OnePlus and the first smartphone to run on the CyanogenMod operating system, an open source project based on Android. The device is a mere 8.9mm thin and has a Full HD 5.5-inch screen with minimum bezel which delivers crisp text and vivid images. While the OnePlus One does not have a metal body like many of its competitors, it is made of sturdy magnesium and has a striking, elegant design. Beneath the OnePlus One’s pleasing exterior, the device is powered by the most powerful Snapdragon processor on the market and quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 CPU. In addition, the OnePlus One has a generous 3GB of RAM which makes it excellent for multi-tasking or using computationally demanding applications.

Another great design feature of the One by OnePlus is its intuitive navigation. OnePlus takes into account that some people like the touch capacitive buttons that are present on most Android cellphones, others do not. As result there is setting allows you to choose how between touch screen only or capacitive keys. You can also use on screen gestures to control the phone. You can wake the phone by tapping the screen twice and you can open a certain application by drawing a simple image on the screen with your finger while the phone is asleep.

The OnePlus One has a fantastic 13MP camera on the back of the device complete with 6 physical lenses, allowing you to take high-detail images with no distortion. On the front of the device there is a powerful 5MP camera, perfect for taking front-facing images and crystal-clear video calls. The front facing camera also has an extra wide viewing angle of 80°, making it excellent for taking group pictures.

As well as having a great spec which puts it in the same class as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8, the OnePlus One is also very reasonable priced. Indeed, the white 16GB costs $349 and the larger 64GB model in a black finish costs $349. This makes it around half the price of its competitors.

Oppo N1

Oppo N1

Innovation is Oppo’s core value and their new smartphone, the Oppo N1, is marketed as the ‘Return to Innovation’.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Oppo N1 is the phone’s camera set up. As opposed to having a back camera and a front-facing camera, the Oppo N1 features the world’s first rotating smartphone camera. This allows you to adjust the angle of the 13MP camera to your preference, making front-facing photos just as clear as back-facing ones. The phone’s Pure Image photography application works in harmony with the camera, allowing you take stunning photographs every time. While some people may be concerned about the durability of a rotating camera—fear not! Oppo have rigorously tested the camera mechanism and it can withstand at least 100,000 rotations. Indeed, Oppo claim that the mechanism can withstand 7 years of use.

The Oppo N1 also has a unique navigation set up as, in addition to the sensitive, multi-touch display, on the back panel of the phone there is a touch panel you can use to scroll, tap and take photos. This not only makes it easy to navigate the large screen, but it also offers a better viewing experience as the screen is not obscured by your fingers.
The Oppo N1 also comes with an O-Click, a discreet Bluetooth key fob. The O-Click has a decent range of 15 meters and allows you to remotely operate the phone’s camera. The O-Click can also let you know if you have any notifications on your phone and can be used to locate your phone. In addition, if you have misplaced your keys, by using the appropriate application on the Oppo N1 you can ring your keys.

The Oppo N1 is available in two operating system variations: Color and CyanogenMod. The former is a highly customised version of Android and the latter is an open source operating system based on Android which is designed to extend the capabilities of a smartphone.
