Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Premium materials, two choices of design

Unveiled at the MWC 2015, Samsung surprised everyone with two new flagship cellphones: the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The S6 features a standard 5.1″ QHD Super AMOLED display whereas the S6 Edge, taking cues from the Note Edge, features the same screen in a curved design. The curved design allows you to quickly respond to messages and calls and you can even colour code contacts so you know who is calling.

While both the phones have a different appearance, their internal workings are practically identical. Indeed, the only difference inside is that the S6 Edge has a 2,600mAh battery whereas the S6 has a slightly smaller 2,550mAh battery.

In the past, Samsung has received a lot of negative comments regarding the use of plastic in their flagship cellphones, especially as their major competitors have metal smartphones. However, Samsung has addressed this issue with their latest cellphones. Both versions of the S6 feature a premium metal and glass construction which is sleek and seamless. In addition, the S6 phones are the slimmest cellphones that the company has made to date. Both styles of the S6 are available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum. Furthermore the S6 is available in Blue Topaz and the S6 Edge is available in Green Emerald.

Beneath the surface the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge sport 64-bit architecture and are running on Android Lollipop. The phones have 3GB RAM and a choice of three amounts of on-board storage: 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. Unfortunately, there is no microSD slot present in the phone.

The cellphones have excellent camera capabilities as both are equipped with a 5MP front-facing camera and an outstanding 16MP camera. In addition, the camera application launches in a mere 0.7 seconds, so you will never miss a photo opportunity.

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

Samsung’s best camera phone.

For those who are searching for a smartphone that physically doubles as a zooming camera, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Zoom is a great option. This is not the first phone specifically geared towards photography created by Samsung. Last year, the company took a foray into this market with the Samsung S4 Zoom. Both models are seen to operate under the same principle; to provide the user with the ability to enjoy a “hands-on” camera within what is essentially the package of the Galaxy phone.

As the name hints, the defining characteristic of this model is a large zoom lens which physically protrudes from the back when activated. As this lens offers an impressive 10x magnification, it is excellent for those who wish to enjoy the optical features of a normal camera within a slender smartphone. Having said this, the addition of the collapsible lens contributes to the thickness of this model; nearly twenty millimeters at the aperture (when closed) and over sixteen millimeters elsewhere. Thankfully, the lens is coated with “Gorilla Glass” to keep it safe from scratches and other damage.

Of course, Samsung had to do away with several features that are included as standard in their S5 series. These include fingerprint sensing and overall waterproofing. Still, this model is highly water resistant although if it is submerged, grave consequences will likely occur. Notwithstanding these two differences, the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom offers a convenient side flap for a MicroSD card (ideal when one is taking many pictures) and its 4.8-inch screen is impressive considering the massive accordion lens on the obverse side. A 720p resolution is slightly lower than the 1080p that the S5 offers and this may be slightly different for those who are used to the clarity of similar models such as the Motorola Moto G. For Samsung fans, the screen is quite similar to the S3 line.

In terms of processing power, the K Zoom runs off of the same Android operating system that was introduced in the S5 phones. Several adjustments have been made such as adding an extra home screen and a scrolling list of settings. A six-core processor allows for adequate performance speeds and its battery life is comparable to that of the S4.

Of course, the main feature of the K Zoom is its optical capabilities. For those who are searching for a photographically oriented smartphone with adequate processing power, the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom may be the ideal choice.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

Small but powerful.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was the Korean tech giant’s fastest-selling handset as the company sold more than 10 million units in less than a month. As in previous years, a few months later Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, a smaller version of their popular flagship. While the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is more stripped back than its big brother, it offers much of the S5’s features in a more convenient cellphone and at a more attractive price point.

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini takes much of its inspiration from the full-size flagship. The phone sports a plastic back panel which is available in a handful of carefully chosen colors and there is a faux-metal trim around the edge of the phone which both strengthens it and gives it a more premium feel. In addition, it’s great to see that the S5 Mini is both water and dust resistant, making it one of the most durable cellphones on the market at the moment.

The cellphone has 4.5 inch screen which makes it both smaller than the screen of the S5 but yet marginally larger than the screen of its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. While the display is not quite Full HD the 720p resolution display is paired with Super AMOLED technology for crisp images and text.

While the S4 Mini received some criticisms in the processor department, this is not the case with the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini. Indeed, the device is powered by a stronger quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz and has 1.5GB of RAM. This allows for effortless everyday use and better performance in computationally demanding tasks such as games and multitasking.

The fingerprint sensor which debuted on the Samsung Galaxy S5 is also present in the S5 Mini. By simply swiping your finger on the bottom of the screen, this feature not only allows you to unlock your phone but it can also be used to authorize online payments. This allows for greater security.

On the back of the cellphone there is an 8MP camera. Unfortunately, unlike its big brother, the S5 Mini does not sport the same ISOCELL sensor and autofocus features. Nevertheless, the camera application is incredibly easy to use and offers great performance in a range of lighting conditions.

The Note 4 is powered by a formidable 2.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor which is complemented by 3GB of RAM.
